More Running

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

Well, I thought I would give a wee update on the running malarkey. Recently I haven’t been going 2/3 times a week. My running partner Emily has been cancelling on me frequently (she uses a treadmill at work) so I’ve just been using that as an excuse not to go at all. I know I should just run by myself but I do find it’s harder to motivate yourself to go at all.
Anyhoo I have now found a new running partner in my friend Keira who is training for the Edinburgh Rat Race which is a crazy 70k race of running, cycling, abseiling etc. She is super-fit so she has to take it easy with me. We went for a run around Arthurs Seat last night which is 5k and gave me a good idea of what I’ll be facing when I do the actual 5k run for Race for Life. Granted, half of the run around Arthurs Seat is uphill but I still managed to do it in 45 mins. I couldn’t run the whole thing non-stop so had to combine some brisk walking into it so I could give my lungs and wee stumpy legs a break. I also ran from my home in Leith to Holyrood to meet my friend as I was really, really running late and there were no buses around then walked home again so it was probably about 5 miles in total. No bad, eh? Posted by hollie@debtfc.co.uk

DebtFC and the “Wild Women” of Talk 107 Radio

Monday, May 14th, 2007

Last week I was invited on Talk 107 radio station “Wild Women” presented by Liz Clark and Hayley Matthews to discuss debt problems. We discussed that it seems we are becoming a nation of debt-a-holics with the attitude of spend now and pay later. Certainly at DebtFC we find that more and more under 25’s have unsecured debts over £30,000 and often this debt is the result of buying items of high worth such as designer clothes, handbags etc.

More and more women and an increasing number of men are also getting into debt by taking out loans and credit cards to pay for cosmetic surgery and treatments such as botox to look good. Is this an emotional need - one step up from “retail therapy” when often if we are feeling down we treat ourselves to something to wear to cheer us up. The pressure on young people to look good is more and more and I am sure we will see an increase in this type of spending in both men and women –  posted by marell@debtfc.co.uk

The “K” word re DebtFC Race For Life 2007

Thursday, May 3rd, 2007

Get a parcel through the post today – my JogScotland T-shirt. That’s it, there is no return to flabby nonsense now. I have been running, well not exactly running but sort of jogging for three weeks now with Jog Scotland. The coaches are very friendly and encouraging but I have to say it does not get any easier – that last run on the way back is a killer. Last week we lost a runner, you know how it goes “five went out and only four came back”, and well that was us  – my sister lost in Almondell in her “spice girl” wedge trainers. She has just moved to sunny Mid Calder from Campbeltown and her other gutties were lost in numerous packing cases, hence the “spice girl “ trainers. Of course, she could not run in them so we ran ahead and the plan was we would meet up on the way back except she kept on walking way past the visitor centre and beyond – thank goodness for mobiles and for bras to keep them in. “Where are you” I ask “I can see trees and em more trees”. Aye right we are in Almondell County Park miraculously she somehow manages to make it to East Calder where she partakes in a wee refreshment in the Grapes whilst I go for my car and collect her.

I have also learnt a new language the “K” word – such as, I’m running the 10k or this week end I’m running the 5k, eh K, K what’s with the K word I mean everyone in the group talks about K’s and not to be outdone I think well maybe I could run a 1k as we all burst out laughing. I am going to increase my training to include running on a Saturday as well as Tuesdays and Thursdays as I am starting to panic that I will not be fit enough to run the 5k in July but the best bit is we have now raised £1327.50 for Cancer Research UK isn’t that brilliant posted by marell@debtfc.co.uk
